Artistic bike racks, round three

The City of Platteville Community Safe Routes Committee is holding its third artistic bike rack design competition.

The committee is commissioning bike racks that serve as functional-public art to enhance the paved and lighted David Canny Rountree Branch Trail. This project is harmonious with the city’s guiding principle of “promoting unique development, places, events, and activities” as both an end result, and also through the design process itself.

“It’s great that talented artists from Platteville will be designing the bike racks,” said Gene Weber of the Platteville Community Arboretum.

Those interested in submitting a design should visit www.platteville.org/recreation to download the application packet. The selected artists or teams will receive $750; $250 for fabrication and $500 upon completion of the rack. Awarded proposals will be responsible for the fabrication of the final product. Proposals are due Jan. 29.

This competition is funded by a grant from the Platteville Community Fund.
