The source of the Grant County mumps outbreak reported last week has been identified as UW–Platteville.

UWP officials reported Monday that five students have been diagnosed with mumps. Grant County health officials reported one case last week, but didn’t identify the victim by age or where the victim was living.

UW–Platteville officials sent an email to students urging them to check their immunization status.

Anyone who thinks he or she has mumps should seek medical care and be sure to call his or her health care provider in advance so contact with others can be limited. Mumps can be spread through the air up to a week around the onset of symptoms by coughing, sneezing or talking. Symptoms show two to three weeks after exposure.
