Rountree Branch trail named for Canny

The man credited for creating Platteville’s Rountree Branch Trail is being honored posthumously with his name on the trail.

The Platteville Common Council unanimously voted Oct. 27 to name the trail the David P. Canny Rountree Branch Trail between the Chestnut Street roundabout and where the trail crosses East Mineral Street at the Platteville Dog Park.

Canny was an optometrist and real estate agent. He died at 78 in 2010.

The trail cannot be named farther east because the state Department of Natural Resources does not allow trails to be named for people, according to city Parks and Recreation director Luke Peters.
