151 fatal

TOWN OF PARIS — A 77-year-old Oregon man was killed and a 60-year-old woman was injured in a car–truck crash on U.S. 151 Friday evening.

James L. Smucker, of Harrisburg, Ore., was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash at 151 and Clay Hollow Road around 8:08 p.m.

Orpha Smucker, 66, was taken by Dickeyville EMS to Southwest Health in Platteville, then taken by Med Flight helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison.

A truck driven by Ashley N. Baur, 27, Hedrick, Iowa, was pulling a horse trailer north on 151 when the truck struck the Smucker vehicle in the driver’s side door, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Jack Johnson said the Smuckers appeared to have missed their turnoff onto U.S. 61 and were turning around to 61.

Baur was not injured, and the two horses in the horse trailer appeared uninjured, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

U.S. 151 was closed from the Dickeyville exit to Airport Road from after the crash until early Saturday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Dickeyville, Jamestown and Platteville fire departments, and the Wisconsin State Patrol crash reconstruction unit.

The crash remains under investigation.
