Steuben man drowns trying to rescue dog

A 25-year-old Steuben man drowned in the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien Sunday while trying to rescue his dog.
Witnesses reported that Joseph "Joey" Sprosty entered the water near the Fischer Street Boat Landing on St. Feriole Island at 3 p.m. Sunday in an effort to rescue his dog. While in the water Sprosty began struggling and dropped below the waterline. When witnesses lost sight of him, emergency 911 was called.
Responding to the scene was the Prairie du Chien Police Department, the Crawford County Sheriff's Department, the Grant County Dive Team, Wisconsin and Iowa DNR, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Interstate EMS, Prairie du Chien Public Works, and fire departments from Prairie du Chien, Bridgeport, Wauzeka and Mar Mac Iowa.
Sprosty's body was recovered at approximately 7:30 p.m. The dog was eventually rescued by firefighters who arrived on scene after the initial 911 call.
