Stoddard firefighters rescued a 58-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man from the Mississippi River Dec. 21.

Anthony Culbert was ice fishing north of the village when he fell through the water while trying to retrieve an ice fishing shanty that had blown away.

According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in Viroqua, a motorist saw Culbert in the water and alerted authorities at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The Stoddard Fire Department sent two firefighters onto the ice. Culbert managed to get out of the water and was on the ice. The firefighters walked out to Culbert and brought him back to shore on their sled.

He was treated at the scene by Tri-State Ambulance.
