Darlington travels to Mineral Point tonight in a Southwest Wisconsin Activities League battle of first-place teams in this week’s McDonald’s SWnews4U.com Game of the Week.
The Redbirds (9–4, 6–1) bounced back from a 58–53 loss at Cuba City last Tuesday, its first defeat in conference play, and hammered visiting Iowa–Grant 71–27 Friday night to remain in a three-way tie for first-place in the SWAL. Junior guard Kathleen Mathias poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the way for Darlington and senior forward Kennedy Rankin chipped in 16 points to send the Redbirds flying over the visiting Panthers.
The Pointers (11–3, 6–1) meanwhile, are coming off a convincing 58–41 victory over Cuba City on Friday night three days after a dominating 78–46 win at Boscobel. The Pointers are riding a seven-game winning streak since a 64–35 loss at Platteville (11–2) on Dec. 12. They have won 10 of their past 11 games dating back to a 64–62 loss at Darlington on Dec. 1.
Mathias scored a game-high 16 points to lead three Redbirds in double figures in that Dec. 1 win over Mineral Point. Kaylee Meyers added 15 points and Rankin chipped in 11 points for the winners. McKenna Reichling scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Pointers in the first meeting between the two schools.
