GAME OF THE WEEK (April 24–30)

SWAL BASEBALL: Cuba City 10, Boscobel 9 (8 innings)

CUBA CITY — Riley Richard walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring in the winning run as the host Cuba City Cubans earned their first victory of the season in walk-off fashion by besting the Boscobel Bulldogs, 10-9, in SWAL baseball action.

J Simon walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth, then after a ground out, Wylie Niles singled. Boscobel elected to intentionally walk Hasken to load the bases, then after fouling off three pitches Richard drew eight-pitch walk-off walk.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to forge a nine all tie, but the Cubans (1-6 overall, 1-5 SWAL) broke through for the go-ahead run in the eighth to snap a six-game slide to start the season.

Jacob Bray’s RBI double cut the Cuba lead to 9–7. Jake Davidson followed with an RBI single to left field, then after a Terak Fischer single and a Riley Bray walk, the Bulldogs tied the game on a squeeze bunt by Avery Faulkner.

The hosts Cubans got off to a strong start by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of Boscobel errors, and then added two runs in the second to open up a 6–1 lead on a Dylan Timmerman triple and another fielding error.

The Bulldogs tied the game with a five-run rally in the third that was capped by Fischer’s RBI single, however the Cubans answered back with two runs in the home-half of the third to regain the lead and added an insurance run in the fifth to build a 9–6 advantage.

Hasken finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of triples, while Timmerman went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double. Niles added two hits for the Cubans and he earned the victory in relief on the mound.

Jacob Bray went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Fischer also finished with three hits to lead Boscobel at the plate.

The Cubans have upcoming games scheduled for today at Platteville, at Darlington on Friday, May 4, at home against Prairie du Chien on Monday, May 7 (5 p.m.), at home against Iowa-Grant on Tuesday, May 8 (4:30 p.m.), and at Riverdale on Wednesday, May 9 (3:30 p.m.).
