Hillsboro wrestlers off to a strong start
Tigers win back-to-back duals, place eighth at Royall Invitational

The Hillsboro wrestling team and coach Snapper Verbsky open the 2015–16 season last week with a pair of non-conference dual meet victories.

The Tigers went on to place eighth out of 13 teams at the Royall Invitational Saturday.

Hillsboro (2–0) opened the season with a 69–6 win over Kickapoo/La Farge.

The Tigers won five of the six contested matches, four via pin, and took advantage of seven forfeits in the rout.

Sophomore Jason Griffiths (113), sophomore Dakota Wells (120), freshman Yobani Mora (138) and senior Jacob Benish (160)  each recorded pins in the victory.

Junior Braden Voltz recorded a 4–3 decision at 285 pounds.

Hillsboro improved to 2–0 with a 48–30 victory over Weston/Ithaca Thursday night.

The Tigers received five forfeits and recorded three pins in the win.

Mora at 138, freshman Dane Bach at 145 and sophomore Jacob Urban at 182 each recorded pins.

Saturday at Royall, Griffiths scored 16 of Hillsboro’s 49 team points with a third-place finish at 113 pounds.

Griffiths (5–1), a sectional qualifier who went 17–12 at 106 as a freshman, opened the tournament with a 44-second pin, then after a semifinal loss to North Crawford/Seneca’s Tyler Finnell, pinned Lucas Oldham of Viroqua in the consolation bracket and defeated Wisconsin Dells’  Alex Morzy 3–2.

Well and Bach each went 2–2 on Saturday to finish fourth at 120 and 145 pounds respectively.

Mora (138), Urban (170), freshman Jake McCoic (182) and Benish (195) each went 1–2 Saturday, but did not place.

The Tigers traveled to Necedah Tuesday night to open the Scenic Bluffs Conference schedule. Hillsboro will next host Brookwood on Tuesday.
