ELROY — Freshman Jaosn Griffiths is Hillsboro’s lone survivor.

He was the only Tiger to reach the finals of Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 Royall Regional, and he is the only Hillsboro wrestler out of 11 that competed to advance to this Saturday’s WIAA D3 Mineral Point Sectional.

Griffiths (17–11) finished second at 106 pounds with a bye, and two pins.

After a first-round bye, he pinned New Lisbon’s Collin Benson in 49 seconds to reach the 106-pound championship.

After a 5–0 loss to Cashton’s Josh Korn, Griffiths was forced into a wrestleback for second place.

With a sectional berth on the line, Griffiths closed out his Valentine’s Day tournament with a 1:59 pin of Brookwood’s Reed Revels a second before the first-period horn sounded.

Griffths will face Weston/Ithaca freshman Gavin Burch (27–13) in Saturday’s quarterfinal round at Mineral Point.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class at sectionals advance to next week’s WIAA Individual Wrestling State Championships that will be held at the Kohl Center, Feb. 26–28.

Freshman Dakota Wells placed 3rd at 113 after going 1–1. Wells (11–16) received a first-round bye, but was pinned in the semifinals by Gunnar Juresh (22–11). Wells bounced back by pinning New Lisbon’s Isaac LaBudda to finish third.

Senior Sebastion Miller (16–12) capped his prep career with a fourth-place finish at 160 pounds.

Junior Jacob Benish (17–15) at 195 and sophomore Braden Voltz (3–11) at 285 also finished fourth.
