MINERAL POINT – It was a big day for the three senior members of the Belmont/Platteville co-op wrestling program as Dusty Jentz and David Stoney captured conference titles for Braves and teammate Adam Niehaus notched his 100th career victory on his way to a third-place finish at the 2012 SWAL/SWC Clash held at Mineral Point High School on Saturday, Feb. 4.
    “The leadership on this team is, in my eyes, the best in the state and it shows when our guys compete. Our three seniors have really taken leadership positions and guys are starting to peak at the right time,” said Braves’ head coach Dane Droessler.
    Jentz placed himself in some elite company at the annual bi-conference showcase by claiming his third career Clash crown after bumping up a weight class to win the 182-pound title at the meet, while D. Stoney joined his teammate atop the award’s podium by winning his first career Clash crown at 220-pounds for the Braves.
    Moving up from 170 to 182 to get some better competition heading into regionals, Jentz (31-1, ranked #2 in Division 2 at 170-pounds) had his work cut out for him, but he showed he was more than up to the task by taking down a pair of highly ranked opponents to finish in first.
    Following an opening round bye, the Platteville senior pinned Mineral Point’s Nate Cody in 1:52, then earned a hard-fought 11-5 decision over Fennimore’s Logan Chappell (32-5, ranked #7 in D3 at 182) to make the finals.
    In the championship match, Jentz took down Iowa-Grant’s Blake Welu (31-2, ranked #1 in D3 at 182) by a score of 13-6 to win his third conference title.
    Jentz previously won Clash titles at 160 and 171.
    “Dusty is just a straight up competitor, who really challenges himself on a day-to-day basis. From what I see, he is wrestling his best at this point in the season and his competitiveness really puts him a step ahead of all the competition,” Droessler stated. “As far as competition goes, the 182 bracket was pretty tough and that’s what Dusty was looking for going into regionals next weekend. He is wrestling at a very high level at this time of the year, which is refreshing to see.”  
    D. Stoney (28-6) was equally impressive for the Braves, following Jentz’s title with one of his own moments later in the 220 finals. After receiving a bye, the Belmont senior got started by pinning Fennimore’s Elias Cox in 1:34 in the quarterfinals.
    Then, D. Stoney decisioned MP’s Brenyn Schmit by a score of 7-4 in the semis to advance to the finals where he defeated I-G’s Cody Rider by a 7-2 decision for the title.
    “David continues to look more and more impressive, and I believe the best is yet to come. This is the time of the year our seniors have been working towards and they are in great position to achieve their individual goals.  David really has been right there in every match this year, so we are very confident in his abilities to take it to the next level. He continues to wrestle with unshaken confidence and has a great opportunity to wrestle his way to the Kohl Center come the end of February,” said Droessler.
    Ad. Niehaus (31-7) opened his day with a bye and an 11-8 decision over Boscobel’s Cyle Ward to reach his 100th career victory, but an 8-2 loss to I-G’s Logan Mills in the semifinals sank the title hopes for the Platteville senior.
    Ad. Niehaus came back with a tough 2-1 decision over MP’s Morgan Mewis to finish third in the 120-pound class.
    “Adam is one heck of a wrestler and leader on this team. He has such high expectations for himself as a competitor, and it shows in the practice room. It is no surprise he has placed himself among an elite group of wrestlers in Belmont-Platteville’s long and proud history of wrestling. It is even more impressive he has done it while only beginning wrestling as a freshman. I am proud of Adam’s efforts day in and day out,” Droessler said.
    The Braves had just eight wrestlers at the meet, but still finished eighth overall with 141 points at the 13-team meet after all eight placed among the top eight in their weight classes. Sophomore Lucas Stoney (24-11) went 2-2 en route to a fourth-place finish at 285, while junior Vinny Anderson (23-13) took sixth at 160 and sophomore John Hentrich (19-18) came in seventh at 138 after posting 3-2 marks.
    Junior Alex Niehaus (10-17) went 1-3 at 113 and sophomore Austin Loeffoelholz (7-17) was 2-3 at 152 to take eighth for the Braves.
    “Our guys really looked fresh coming off of two weeks of straight practice and we are definitely ready going into River Valley on Saturday. It was good to get all eight of our guys in the top eight in the conference. As far as coming out strong, we had a very successful first couple of rounds which put us in position to score within the middle of the conference,” said Droessler.
    Darlington had a tough day on the mats at Saturday’s Clash as they pulled 12th overall with 66 points with one fourth-place finisher, one sixth, two sevenths and an eighth among their eight wrestlers.
    Senior Tyler Black (13-10) began his tournament by pinning River Valley’s Jacob Heiser in 46 seconds and Prairie du Chien’s Justin Panka in 1:16 to advance to the semifinal round at 182.
    Senior Brady McDaniel (18-15) went 3-2 with a pair of pins to take sixth at 145, while freshman Zach Wolf (4-9) went 3-2 with a pair of pins at 220 and sophomore Hayden Black (20-12) was 1-2 with a pin at 285 to add seventh for the ‘Birds.
    Senior Michael Sinclair (9-17) registered a 27-second pin in his opening match at 126 to finish eighth on the day.
    Iowa-Grant ended Mineral Point’s five-year reign as Clash champion by rolling to the team title with 304 points. The Pointers were a distant second with 261 points, followed by Lancaster (234), River Valley (196) and Richland Center (188) in the top five.
    Eight different teams crowned a champion at the meet and five of those had multiple champions led by Lancaster with three titlists.
    Cuba City/Southwestern’s Jarod Donar claimed his fourth career Clash title and third MVP honor on Saturday. The senior has a career record of 179-0.
    The SWAL topped the SWC in overall champions, 9-5, and finalists, 20-8, at the meet.
    Belmont/Platteville will compete in the WIAA Division 2 regional meet to be held at River Valley High School in Spring Green on Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 11 a.m.
    The top two individuals from each weight class at the regional advance to the individual sectional tournament to be held at Richland Center High School on Saturday, Feb. 18.
    The top team at the regional advance to team sectional competition, which will be held at Wisconsin Dells High School on Tuesday, Feb. 14, starting at 6 p.m.
    Darlington heads home to host a WIAA D3 regional meet on Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m.
    The D3 team sectional meet will be held at Lancaster High School on Feb. 14, also starting at 6 p.m.; and the D3 individual sectional meet will be held at Mineral Point High School on Feb. 18.
