RICHLAND CENTER – At the Richland Center Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 17, both the Darlington and Belmont/Platteville wrestling teams had limited line-ups available, but each team was able to place several individuals at the always-tough annual tournament.
The Braves had just four wrestlers competing at the tournament and each was able to place in the top five of their respective weight class to place 11th overall at the 13-team meet with 94 points.
The Redbirds fielded just seven wrestlers and placed three on the day to finish 12th with 60 points.
Sophomore Hayden Black placed second at 285-pounds to lead the Redbirds, while senior Adam Niehaus was runner-up at 120-pounds for the Braves.
Black (11-2) followed an opening round bye with a 2-1 decision over Baraboo’s Michael Zipsie, a pin of Weston/Ithaca’s Evan Strebe in 2:24 and a forfeit win over Monroe’s Brett Zimmerman to make the finals, but a pin in 1:27 by Hillsboro’s Hayden Nachtigal kept Black from the title.
Niehaus (15-2) also opened with a bye, then pinned Cochrane-Fountain City’s Matthew Rasmussen (in :07) and Richland Center’s Hunter Whitney (3:19) to make the finals at 120, but #2-ranked Spencer Davies of Mauston defeated Niehaus, 8-1, in the championship match for the title.
Senior David Stoney (10-2) went 3-1 with two pins on the way to a third-place finish at 220, while sophomore John Hentrich (10-9) went 2-2 at 138 to place fourth and junior Vinnie Anderson (10-6) went 3-1 at 170 to take fifth for the Braves.
“We decided to send a lot of our guys over to Mineral Point to get some experience at the JV tournament. As for the four guys we had wrestling, I thought we had a good day, but we missed having a great day by a couple points getting away from us,” stated Belmont/Platteville head coach Dane Droessler. “The intensity our guys have been wrestling with has been great, especially as we get into the holiday season because it only gets tougher from here on out.”
Senior Tyler Black (8-4) went 2-2 with a pin at 182 to finish fourth for the Redbirds, while senior Michael Sinclair (4-6) went 2-2 to place sixth at 126.
Baraboo crowned four champions to garner the team title with 258 points. River Valley followed in second with 243.5 points, with Weston/Ithaca in third at 220 and Richland Center in fourth at 210.
Darlington travels to Mineral Point for a tough SWAL dual on Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
Belmont/Platteville heads to La Crosse for the annual Bi-State Classic on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28-29.
