Darlington & BSMS athletes punch tickets to state
28 area qualifiers are headed to state in 17 events

    BANGOR – Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg sophomore Emma Lawrence and Darlington sophomore Grady Rielly were crowned sectional champions in hurdle events to lead a large group of area athletes who qualified for this weekend’s state meet at the WIAA Division 3 Sectional Track and Field Meet hosted by Bangor High School on Thursday, May 26.
    Rielly will be joined by 18 of his teammates in La Crosse after the Redbirds boys’ and girls’ teams combined to advance five individuals in five events and five relay teams to state. Lawrence in one of nine Zephyrs to qualify for state in seven individual events and two relays.
    The 2016 WIAA State Track and Field Meet will be held at UW-La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday, June 3-4. The Division 2 & 3 meet will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Competition starts at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
    BSMS was second overall in the girls’ sectional standings with 58.5 points, finishing just a point behind Brookwood (59.5) for the girls’ team title; while Darlington tied for sixth-place with 39 points. Belmont and Black Hawk tied for 29th (1) with no state qualifiers.
    The Redbirds placed fourth in the boys’ standings with 52 points and the Zephyrs were 10th at 33 behind champion Independence/Gilmanton (63). The Braves tied for 24th (4) with no state qualifiers.
    Rielly won the boys’ 110-meter high hurdles in 15.72 seconds and teamed with fellow sophomore Kameron Blosch and juniors Jared Meister and Trevor Johnson to place third in the 800-meter relay race in 1:35.09.
    Darlington junior Mitchell Wagner will join his teammate at state in the 110 hurdles after placing third in 16.26, and he also punch his ticket in the high jump by finishing fourth with a jump of 5’10”.
    The Redbirds’ 3,200 relay squad of seniors Sean Barbee and Blake Cwynar, junior Conner Hackett and sophomore Tanner Evenstad also placed third in 8:25.50, while Hackett earned a state berth in the 3,200 run in 10:16.65 for the ‘Birds.
    The Darlington girls’ team qualified in three relays events with the 4x800 team of senior Jaci Moseley, junior Paige Schilling and sophomores Reaghan Komprood and Ilse Mendez placing third in 10:22.43, while the 4x100 team of senior Carly Langkamp and freshmen Roxi Reuter, Kaylee Meyers and Kathleen Mathias and the 4x200 team of Langkamp, Meyers, Mathias and sophomore Meghan Douglas each placed fourth in 51.84 seconds and 1:49.70, respectively.
    Komprood also qualified for state in the 3,200 with her fourth-place time of 12.28.96, and junior Taryn Rankin advanced in the discus with a throw of 111’8”.
    Lawrence ran away with the sectional title in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in a winning time of 45.59 seconds, and she joined with senior Payton Bastian and juniors Paige Murphy and Ally Jansen to place second in the 800 relay in 1:47.60.
    Bastian, Murphy and Jansen teamed with senior Lindsey Walton to take third in the 400 relay in 51.29 seconds, and Murphy earned a third state berth by placing third in the long jump with a leap of 16’5.75”.
    Sophomore Brianna Leahy moved on for the Zephyrs in the shot put after taking second with a toss of 36’10”.
    Senior Kyle Pulvermacher earned state berths in both of the boys’ throwing events, finishing third in the shot put at 46’0.5” and fourth in the discus at 159’10”.
    Senior Joel Fawcett added a third in the pole vault at a height of 12’6”, and sophomore David Germaine took fourth in the 400 dash in 51.69 seconds to also qualify for state for the tri-op.
