FENNIMORE — Five Fennimore seniors are getting one final high school baseball season after all.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the WIAA spring season in March. Then, the American Legion summer season was cancelled in May.
Fennimore varsity baseball coach Brent Sheckler of a summer league opportunity and entered his team in the 20-team Dane County Senior Babe Ruth League, organized by Dodgeville’s Pat Reilly.
Fennimore is part of the six-team North division along with Prairie du Chien, Westby, Viroqua and Riverdale.
The Eagles opened their 13-game summer season with a pair of losses at Viroqua on July 1. Fennimore then split a pair of games July at Prairie du Chien. Last Thursday’s game was Riverdale was rained out.
Fennimore will play all of its games on the road this summer because its home field is located on Fennimore High School grounds and was unavailable when the season started.
Fennimore High School assistant coach Jake Adkins is the head coach of the U18 Babe Ruth summer league team, as Sheckler has his hands full coaching his three children’s youth baseball and softball teams this summer.
The Fennimore Babe Ruth played Reilly’s Dodgers in a pair of preseason scrimmages the last week of June before beginning a 13-game summer league schedule July 1.
Sixteen players are part of Fennimore’s Babe Ruth team, including recently graduated seniors Will Ahnen, Devin Cole, Boston Flannery, Taggan Gommel and Gavyn Muench. Lancaster graduate Isaiah Place, who played with the Fennimore American Legion team last summer, is playing on the Fennimore Babe Ruth team as well this summer.
Other team members include, juniors Warren Adam, Druw Fifrick, McCoy Fitzgerald, Chase Hestetune and Teagan Napp, sophomores Mason Adkins, Max Kenney and Devin Kreul, and freshmen Lucas Lendosky and Max Miles.
“I am happy for the seniors,” said Sheckler. “I am happy they get to play some type of baseball this year because they missed their entire spring season. Will we be competitive this summer? I don’t know. Will anyone be that competitive with limited practice and strange circumstances? I don’t know. I am just happy to see high school baseball again in the area.
“In all honesty, I’m just happy the kids are out there getting to play baseball again, weather it’s organized baseball like this Babe Ruth league or just 9 or 10 kids showing up at the park to play a pick up game.
“We scrimmaged at Dodgeville a couple times before our summer season began and you could just see the kids were having so much fun. I was also pleasantly surprised we looked pretty good too.”
Fennimore also has a U16 tournament travel team, coached by Steve Lendosky, that has a summer scheduled filled with weekend tournaments.
Mason Adkins, Kenney, Kreul, Lucas Lendosky and Miles split time between the U16 tournament team and Fennimore’s U18 Babe Ruth team playing all games that don’t conflict.
