COBB — It took a few innings to find their groove, but once the Iowa–Grant Panthers locked in Thursday’s SWAL softball game against visiting Cuba City, it was over in the blink of an eye.
Coach Deanna Fulton’s club scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to turn a scoreless pitcher’s duel into a 10–0 Iowa–Grant rout.
Senior third baseman Ashley Liddicoat broke up the scoreless tie with an RBI single in the fourth. Then junior pitcher Brea Stanton smashed a three-run home to ignite I–G’s big inning.
Juniors Shania Sarbacker and Kylie Moneypenney added RBI singles in the rally.
Senior center fielder Brittanie Lawinger provided the final blow — a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth — to give the Panthers the five-inning victory.
Stanton struck out six and allowed just two hits in the complete game shutout. The I–G defense behind her was flawless and did not commit an error.
Friday afternoon the Panther bats stayed hot during a 15–1 five-inning victory over Southwestern.
Junior shortstop Taylor Jackson went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Lawinger (2-for-4) and Sarbacker (2x2) each had two hits and scored two runs in the win.
Freshman Hannah Stevens had a two-run triple in the third inning.
Stanton earned her ninth win of the season allowing one run on one hit in four innings.
Monday afternoon Iowa–Grant held off a late rally to defeat Fennimore 3–2 and extend its winning streak to four games.
Lawinger went 3-for-4 in the win.
With the win Iowa–Grant improved to 10–1 overall and remains in sole possession of first place in the SWAL with a 6–0 record, two games up on defending D3 state champion Mineral Point (8–3, 5–2 SWAL).
“It was finally nice to get out and play again. It took us a little while to get the bats going against Cuba City, but once we did we really took off,” said Fulton. “It seems like once we get that first run across we relax and become a much better, more free-swinging team. We are playing well right now. And I’m not going to lie, it’s been fun.”
