Hillmen top Wildcats in SWC gymnastics dual

PLATTEVILLE – The Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton/Darlington gymnastics team split a pair of dual matches over the past week, defeating Prairie du Chien/Fennimore, 119.1–116.2, at home on Friday, Jan. 29; and then falling to Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster, 129.05–116.95, at PHS on Monday, Feb. 1.

The Hillmen improved to 3-0 on the season with Monday’s win, while the Wildcats slipped to 1-4.

Platteville sophomore Brooke Von Glahn won the balance beam with a score of 8.825 to offset he teammates struggles in the event, then posted four scores of 8.4 or better on the floor exercise to close out the dual strong.

Von Glahn also won the uneven bars (8.3), floor exercise (8.875) and the all-around (34.1) to lead the Hillmen.

Belmont junior Hailey Jentz finished second in the all-around (31.6) after placing second on the beam (7.45), fourth on the bars (7.65), fourth on the floor (8.45) and sixth on the vault (8.05).

Platteville sophomore Mackenzie Champion finished second on the vault (8.275) and tied teammate senior Katrina Stastny for second on the bars at 8.25.

Darlington sophomore Quintessa Haesler led the Wildcats, placing third in the all-around (31.4) while finishing first on the vault (8.475), third on the floor (8.475), fourth on the beam (6.9) and sixth on the bars (7.55).

Ava Curwen was fourth overall on the vault (8.2) and Hannah Husemann was fifth on the beam (6.8) for the Wildcats.

On Friday, Haesler finished second in the all-around competition with a score of 31.5.

Haesler also finished first in the uneven bars (7.75), and had second-place finishes in the vault (7.8), balance beam (7.7) and floor exercise (8.25).

Curwen placed fourth in the all-around with a combined score of 28.95. Curwen also tied for third in the vault (7.6) and floor exercise (7.95), while placing fifth on the balance beam (6.8) and sixth on the uneven bars (6.6).

The Southwestern co-op will compete at the annual Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster Invitational at PHS on Saturday, Feb. 6, starting at 9:30 a.m.

The Hillmen will also compete in a SWC dual at River Valley/Barneveld on Monday, Feb. 8, beginning at 6 p.m.
