The talented Iowa-Grant wrestling team continued its fine 2011-12 season by finishing third at last week’s two-day, 42-team Mid-States Classic at UW-Whitewater.
    The Panthers scored 161.5 points, and it could have been more in not for losing senior Brandon Pierick to a shoulder injury if the 160-pound semifinals, to finish behind only team champion Burlington (193.5) and runner-up Mukwonago (168).
    Senior Blake Welu (17-1) finished second at 182 pounds losing only a 7-5 overtime decision to Delevan-Darien’s unbeaten Marcus Hudson.
    Fellow seniors Logan Mills (16-5) and Jake Yelinek (16-8) wrestled all the way back to the third-place match after suffering early-round losses on Wednesday.
    Mills rebounded with six straight victories to finish third at 120 pounds, while Yelinek eventually finished fourth at 145.
Pierick forfeit his semifinal match after injuring his shoulder, as well as his consolation and fifth-place matches to finish sixth. Coach Allen expects Pierick back in the lineup for the Weston Invitational on Jan. 14.
    “I thought third was a very respectable finish,” said I-G head coach Ryan Allen. “There were many good schools here and to place in the top three really shows that we have some good wrestlers on this team. However, I feel that we could have done a bit better.  Some guys on the team got a little bit caught up in the moment in their matches just didn’t wrestle like they could have. We have several wrestlers on this team that need to realize that they are very good when they just wrestle and stop thinking so much.
    “We know we have a great team here.  We just need to make sure we do the right things to be ready to wrestle at regionals.”
