Area athletes win 20 events at meet

HAZEL GREEN – The Darlington boys’ and girls’ track and field teams both finished second and the Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg teams each placed third at the Southwestern Quadrangular held at SHS on Thursday, April 21.

The Redbirds posted five first-place performances in the 18 events to finish second in the girls’ meet with 81 points, while the Redbirds added two first-place finishes on the way to a second-place finish in the boys’ meet with 71 points.

The BSMS Knights won seven events in the girls’ meet and six events in the boys’ meet to place third overall in each with 72 and 63 points, respectively. 

Senior Judith Meister won the 1,600 (5:48.72) and 3,200 (12:48.59) meter runs to lead the Redbirds in the girls’ meet, while senior Rhett Reuter also ran away with the boys’ titles in the 1,600 (4:58.73) and 3,200 (12:05.88) for the ‘Birds.

Junior Laura Weaver claimed the girls’ discus title (95’4”) and sophomore Alyza Johnson raced to a first-place finish in the 100 dash (13.66) for Darlington. 

The Redbirds’ 4x800-meter relay team of juniors Grace Cooper and Madyson King, sophomore Addison DePauw and freshman Stella McGowan also won a title at the meet (12:27.36).

Seniors Luke Unbehaun and Ben Vandigo and juniors Nevada Sandlin and Nate Lawrence were each part of three titles for the BSMS Knights.

Unbehaun won the 110 (16.93) and 300 (44.10) hurdles and also combined with Sandlin, Vandigo and Lawrence to win the 4x200 relay (1:37.56). Sandlin, Vandigo and Lawrence teamed with junior Garrett Ray to win the 4x400 relay (3:44.56), while Vandigo and Lawrence joined senior Jackson Klang and Cody Haynes to win the 4x800 relay (9:55.05).

Sandlin also was first the long jump (18’3”) for the Knights.

Sisters Hanna and Kayci Martensen teamed up on five of the seven titles for the Lady Knights. Hanna, a sophomore, won the 300 low hurdles (51.58) and pole vault (9’0”) and Kayci, a senior, was first in the 200 (27.83).

The Martensens joined with senior Joelle Sigwarth and junior Anna Richardson to take first in the 800 relay (1:52.37) and also with Richardson and junior Ella Woodworth to take first in the 1,600 relay (4:13.95).

Woodworth won the 400 (1:05.64) and senior Alison Winter won the 800 (2:59.31) for the tri-op.

All other place winners are listed below.

The Cubans are scheduled to host the annual Christopher Becker Memorial Invitational on Thursday, April 28, and also participate in the Fennimore Invitational on Monday, May 2.

The Knights will also compete at both of those events and are also scheduled to take part in the rescheduled Darlington Invitational on Tuesday, May 3.

BSMS is also scheduled to compete at the Prairie du Chien Invitational on Monday, April 18. Black Hawk and Belmont are set to compete at the River Ridge Invitational on Tuesday, April 19.
