DeleteMUSCODA - The Riverdale track team competed at the 23rd annual North Crawford Invite on Tuesday, April 12.

Coaches limited their athletes to a couple of events each due to cold weather.

“We are trying to get through this cold streak without any injures,” stated Coach McKay.

Despite the limits, the Chieftains still had a lot of success.

On the girls side, Gabby Werthwein lead the way with a third place finish in the disc. Also finishing high in the disc was Macy Mau with an eighth place finish. Mau also finished sixth in the 1600-meter.

The girls 4x200 relay team of Alexis Ambort, Riley Conner, Reyna Escobedo, and Miranda Swaziek finished eighth.  Callie Arellano ran down a number of runners the last 40 meters of the 200-meter to finish eighth overall.

Rounding out the scoring for the girls was an eighth place finish for Hannah Hanson in the long jump.

The Chieftains boys were led again by Brian Mathews with a second place finish in the 1600-meter run.

Micah Arenallo continued his great season at pole vault.  He finished second on a cold and windy night. Arenallo also added two seventh place finishes in the high jump and 300-meter hurdles.

“Micah asked to run the hurdles this week,” the coach noted. “Micah had very little practice and still finished in the top seven. That tells you what kind of athlete Micah is. We are hoping he continues to work hard and keeps improving this season.”

Lucas Swaziek finished fifth in the pole vault for the Chieftains as well.

“We have so many athletes finishing just out of the top eight,” Coach McKay stated. “Hopefully these next couple weeks, we can improve during practice and get over that hump.”

The Riverdale track team travelled to Kickapoo High School on Monday, April 18 for the Lee Griffin Invitational. They will be back in action on Thursday, April 21 at Reedsburg.

The Chieftains will finish the out the month of April with four meets the last week in April.
