BRODY MILZ (top) won a 10-2 major decision over Mineral Points Kyle Juedes during their quarterfinals match at 195-pound at Saturdays WIAA Division 3 sectional meet. Juedes was ranked #7 in D3.

MINERAL POINT – Darlington/Black Hawk sophomore Kolbe Ubersox finished in second-place at 132-pounds to earn his second state berth and junior Tyler Mosley placed third at 170-pounds to lock up his first state berth at the 2017 WIAA Division 3 Individual Sectional Meet held at Mineral Point High School on Saturday, Feb. 18.
“Kolbe making his second trip to state is a pretty big feat. He performed really well during the day. He did have a slight let down in the championship match, but he came back strong in the wrestleback. I am confident he will go into the state tournament with the attitude needed to be successful. To make it to state is a very difficult task as noted by the number of good wrestlers who did not qualify. He has made it his first two years of eligibility, now the next step is to place in the tournament,” said Darlington/Black Hawk co-head coach William Chambers.
“Last year was Tyler’s first year of wrestling ever. Considering his limited time in the sport, it is a pretty amazing accomplishment for him to make it to state. Tyler has the potential of doing well at the state tournament. He has a unique style that can serve him well.”
Ubersox (40-3, ranked #4 in D3) advanced to the finals at 132 after pinning Aquinas junior Albert Flottmeyer in 1:01 in the quarterfinals and posting an 8-1 decision over Ithaca/Weston junior Gavin Burch in the semifinal round. In the finals, Deerfield senior Cal Hansen (44-1, #5) pinned Ubersox in 1:03 to take home the sectional title.
In the wrestleback, Ubersox posted a 15-0 technical fall over Fennimore sophomore Maguire Fitzgerald in 4:34 to lock up second-place in the class.
Mosley (24-18) started his tournament off by posting a 13-8 decision over Brookwood junior Garrett Atteln in the quarterfinals and a 12-6 decision over Fennimore junior Tyler Klaas in the semifinals to earn his spot in the finals and locked up a state berth.
Iowa-Grant/Highland junior Brady Peat (40-6, #6) pinned Mosley in 27 seconds to win the sectional title at 170, and then Marshall senior Walt Easley defeated Mosley by a score 7-3 in the wrestleback to drop him to third in the class.
The WIAA State Wrestling Meet will be held at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 23-25. Ubersox will face Shiocton junior Sawyer Theobald (21-6, #8) in a preliminary round match at 132-pounds, while Mosley opens against Spring Valley/Elmwood sophomore Carter Merth (34-10, #9) in a preliminary round match at 170-pounds. The D2/3 competition is set to start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23.
Preliminary winners advance to the quarterfinal round on Friday morning, starting at 11:15 a.m. The state meet continues through Saturday evening.
The WarBirds had nine wrestlers competing at Saturday’s sectional, but the season came to an end for their other seven qualifiers despite a few close calls.
Freshman Cayden Milz (28-16) at 120 and juniors Paul King (33-11) at 126 and Brody Milz (25-13) at 195 each narrowly missed out on a state berth after placing fourth in their respective weight classes, while freshman Cody Blosch (22-19) at 113 and senior Jake Tuescher (24-15) each won their quarterfinal matches, but lost their next two matches to see their seasons come to an end.
“The other wrestlers competed hard. The sectional is always extremely challenging for athletes to place in the top three. Typically all eight wrestlers in each weight class are really solid wrestlers. Hopefully, they can use the last match of this year as a springboard for next year. I am looking forward to see how the two young men finish this season and how the team competes next year. I believe there is a lot of potential next year and the team will be really competitive,” noted Chambers.
The toughest finish of them all may have been Tuescher, the team’s lone senior, who suffered an injury in his semifinal match and tried to tough it out in his consolation match.
“Jake wrestled really well this year. The 285-pound division was a very competitive weight class this year in the tournaments in which Jake competed. He has beaten some athletes who will be at the state tournament this year. He did get injured during his semifinal match and tried his best to wrestle back, but was not able to make it back through. I know he really wanted to make state, but he should be proud of his season,” Chambers stated.
Sophomore Hunter Bredeson (27-16) at 138 and freshman Bailey Schilling (2-5) at 182 each lost their opening round sectional match and did not get a chance to wrestleback, while sophomore Cody Nielsen did not compete at Saturday’s sectional after getting injured during Tuesday’s team sectional competition.
At Orfordville, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, the SWAL champion and #3-ranked Fennimore Golden Eagles defeated the WarBirds, 43-24, in a sectional final dual meet match to advance to the Team State Tournament for the third year in a row.
The Eagles won nine of the 14 matches with five pins, a major decision and three decisions to get by the WarBirds for the second time this season.
Paul King pinned Trent Helms in 3:01 at 126-pounds and Kolbe Ubersox added a 5-1 decision over Hunter Wardell at 138 to keep the score close at 13-9 five matches into the finals, but Fennimore followed with two pins and two 6-4 overtime decision over the next four matches to build a 31-9 lead.
Tyler Mosley pinned Tavian Kaschub in 5:50 at 182 and Brody Milz pinned Dylan Kehoe in 1:30 at 195, while Jake Tuescher earned a 6-0 decision over Deven O’Brien at 285 for the WarBirds’ other victories in the finals.
Darlington/Black Hawk advanced to the finals by defeating Brookwood, 54-26, in a semifinal match, while Fennimore downed Westby, 57-9, to move on.
The WarBirds opened with forfeits wins by Eric Hocking at 106, Cody Blosch at 113, Cayden Milz at 120 and Conner Novak at 132 to build up an early 24-4 lead.
    K. Ubersox in 1:48 at 138, Carson Lobdell in 1:07 at 160, Lance Ubersox in 1:55 at 170, B. Milz in 2:48 at 196 and Tuescher in 1:55 at 285 all recorded falls for the WarBirds to help secure the victory.
“The team sectional was a great experience. Brookwood and Fennimore were both rematches for us. Both teams have great wrestlers. Brookwood had four open weight classes, which gave us a distinct advantage and the boys wrestled well. The results of the Brookwood match were almost a mirror image of our first dual,” said Coach Chambers.
“The Fennimore rematch was exciting to be part of. Fennimore is an extremely talented team. We went in thinking if our athletes wrestled well and the a few things went our way we had a chance. Unfortunately, the two overtime matches went their way and we couldn’t quite get a fall we needed in another match. Kudos to Fennimore.”
