Lancaster softball team uses 14 hits to defeat PdC in five innings

LANCASTER — On a night when their fielding and batting were both at their best, the Lancaster varsity softball team cruised to a 12-1 victory in five innings last Tuesday night against the visiting Blackhawks of Prairie du Chien.

With the win, coach Katie Landon’s squad improved to 2-2 in Southwest Wisconsin Conference action and 4-7 overall, while Prairie du Chien fell to 1-3, 1-7 with the loss.

Offensively, the Flying Arrows needed just three innings to do their damage, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second, six in the third and three more in the fourth.

In the bottom of the second inning, Madison Straka and Eden Connelly each belted a one-run double, while Hannah Riley had a one-run single to score Connelly.

In the third inning, sisters Brooklyn and Eden Connelly each had a two-run single, while Riley picked up her second RBI of the game with a her second straight single.

Sophomore Lindsey Wolf also hit a solo home run in the inning, while Katie Martin had a stand-up triple.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lancaster scored two runs on back-to back wild pitches, then got a sacrifice fly from Jessica Miles to score Brooklyn Connelly.

In all, Lancaster managed 14 hits, getting two each from Eden Connelly, Hannah Riley, Katie Martin, Brooklyn Connelly and Madison Straka. Eden Connelly also had two doubles and a team-high three RBIs.

Coming away with two RBIs each were Riley and Brooklyn Connelly, while Wolf, Miles and Straka each had one.

Picking up the win in the pitching circle was Riley, who in five innings allowed one earned run off five hits, while striking out five batters and walking none.

Following this past Tuesday night’s game at Richland Center, the Flying Arrows will host Platteville this Thursday, then will travel too Muscoda on Friday and to Fennimore on Saturday.
