The Platteville/Lancaster girls soccer team is 2–1–1 early in the season after one win, one tie and one defeat in its most recent three-game stretch.

Senior Sami Brookens scored three goals in a 21-minute span in the second half to lift the Hillmen to a 4–0 Southwest Wisconsin Conference victory over visiting Galena/River Ridge on Thursday, April 6. Two of the goals came via penalty kicks in the 67th and 71st minute. Fellow senior Jenna Vogel added an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.

Last Tuesday Vogel assisted on senior Lauren Thole’s game-tying goal in the 83rd minute of a 1–1 non-conference draw with Reedsburg. Last Thursday the Hillmen suffered a 1–0 loss at Sugar River.

Platteville/Lancaster will host Poynette on Thursday before travling to West Salem on Saturday and hosting Mount Horeb on Monday.

The Platteville/Lancaster girls’ soccer team got off to a winning start Tuesday, April 4, dispatching visiting Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld 1–0 in a non-conference game at PHS.

Brookens scored the game’s only goal in the 17th minute with a fine outside-of-the-foot finish from 16 yards out on an assist from sophomore defender Jenna Johnson. Brookens, the 2016 Southwest Wisconsin Conference Player of the Year, led the conference in scoring a year ago with 32 goals and eight assists in 21 matches.

Sophomore Sierra Hooper filled in at goalkeeper due to Sami Knockel’s absence and made five saves recorded her first shutout of her young career.

According to Hillmen head coach Brandon Pink, sophomores Lydia Murphy and Abby Whitford, and senior Kaelyn Johnson, “put on notable performances on defense and in the midfield, blunting many offensive attacks from the determined and hard-working visitors.”

Platteville/Lancaster outshot the Wisconsin Heights co-op 7–5 in the defensive battle.
