RICHLAND CENTER — A strong defensive effort carried the Platteville girls basketball team to a 70–43 victory over Living World Lutheran last Wednesday at the six-team, two-day Richland Center Candy Cane Classic.
Coach Brandon Temperly’s Hillmen held the Timberwolves (7–2) to just 15 points in the second half to blow open a nine-point halftime lead.
Junior forward Skye Digman led the Platteville scoring with 19 points. Freshmen Sami Martin and Becca Hoyer added 15 and 12 respectively. Martin also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
Senior guard Brelynn Updike had a nice game with 10 points, and freshman point guard Josie Nies had seven points and four assists for the winners.
Last Tuesday, Platteville suffered a 59–46 loss to Barneveld. The Golden Eagles (5–5) caught fire in the second half, making five 3-pointers to outscored the Hilmen 39–25 in the final 18 minutes.
Senior Teegan Pickarts made three of her six 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a career-high 27 points to lead Barneveld.
Senior Mia Whitish added a pair of 3-pointers and scored 15 of her 21 points in the second half.
Digman and freshman Izzy Carroll scored 13 points apiece to lead Platteville in defeat. Carroll added nine rebounds and two steals, while Digman pulled down eight boards. Martin added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Nies finished with seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
In other Candy Cane Classic action, the host Horents and Mount Horeb each went 2–0. Richland Center defeated Mineral Point last Tuesday and Barneveld on Wednesday, while Mount Horeb defeated Living World Lutheran and Mineral Point.
Platteville (7–3, 2–0 SWC) will travel to undefeated, first-place Richland Center (8–0, 3–0 SWC) this Friday. The Hornets are currently ranked 10th in Division 3 according to wissports.net.
