Hillmen sweep 51st annual Platteville Relays

PLATTEVILLE — The cool, windy conditions and overcast skies weren’t ideal for the 51st running of the Platteville Relays, but the Hillmen were red hot on the track last Thursday afternoon.

The Hillmen got a number of standout performances in less than ideal weather to earn a sweep of the 51st annual Platteville Relays.

The Platteville boys won four events and finished second in three others at the all relay meet to score 95.83 to edge runner-up Darlington (92) for the boys’ team title. Belmont scored 11 points to placed ninth, while Potosi had one eighth-place finish to score one team point for 11th place.

The Platteville girls also won four events and had four second-place finishes to score 99 points to win the girls’ team title. Darlington also finished second in the girls’ competition with 82 points, followed by Cuba City (78). The Potosi girls placed seventh with 30 points. Belmont finished ninth with 19 points.

“It is always nice to win your own invitational,” said Platteville head coach Rob Serres. “The kids performed really well in conditions that were cool and windy. I like the way our teams are working together to help cheer on each other and are concerned with each others events.”

“The season is going great, but way too fast,” added Serres.

Junior Donovan Blevins (17’8”) and freshman Miles Steckling (17’7½”) had the top two jumps of the day to win the boys’ long jump relay with a combined total of 35’3½”.

Blevins also teamed with senior Dan Iselin and sophomores Tyler Moss and Jace Serres to win the distance medley relay in 3:45.87. Iselin, Serres, junior Logan Henry and sophomore Alex Sonsala ran to victory in the boys’ 4x800 with a winning time of 8:29.06. Iselin, Serres, Henry and senior Nick Mewhirter also placed second in the 4x400 relay (3:37.95).

Junior Caleb Lueder (126’) and freshman Austin Jentz  (120’4”) combined to win the boys’ discus with a total distance of 246’4”.

Blevins, Mewhirter, sophomore A.J. Barner and junior Mike Mussara finished second in the 4x100 relay (45.82).
Barner, Mussara, Henry and Moss finished second in the sprint medley relay (1:42.75).

Belmont junior Jake Wedig  (49’1½”) had the best individual shot put throw and teamed with senior Austin Adams (30’8½”) to finish fourth in the boys’ shot put. They also placed fifth in the discus relay (208’) with Wedig posted the top individual mark at 132’5”. Adams, Seth Peters, Tristen Gilbertson and Andrew Weber palced seventh in the distance medley relay (4:19.37).

Potosi’s Jeffrey Jacobson, Tyler Thingvold, Christian Bauer and Nelson Bauer placed eighth in the distance medley relay at 3:20.64.

In the girls’ competition, freshman Makayla Rooney tied the Platteville freshman team record and earned the sixth spot on Platteville’s all-time list by clearing 5’3” in the high jump, finishing five inches better than Cuba City’s Maizee Splinter (4’10”). Rooney teamed  senior Sara Langmeier (4’4”) won the girls’ high jump relay.

Senior Grace Hammermeister and freshman Ashli Vesbach won the 200-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 39.06 seconds. Freshman Becca Hoyer (28’0½”) and junior Hannah Langmeier (27’5½”) won the triple jump.

Senior Skye Digman had the top individual throw in the shot put (39”4½”) and teamed with freshman Izzy Carroll (29’8”) to win the girls’ shot put relay.

Kasper and junior Emilie Busch ran to a second-place finish in the 2x100 relay in 28.02 seconds. Busch (8’) also earned a silver medal along with Hammermeister (7’6”) in the girls’ pole vault. Kasper, Burkhard, Hannah Langmeier and sophomore Clare Drefcinski finished second in the sprint medley relay (2:04.31).

Rooney, senior Brelynn Updike and sophomores Cori Kettler and Renee Momot placed second in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:46.94.

Sophomores Elsie deHaan (94’1”) and Sasha Wrege (85’10”) combined to earn Belmont’s top finish with a third-place finish in the discus relay (179’11”). They also teamed up to place sixth in the shot put (58’5”). Freshman Lizzy Haag (4’6”) and junior Taylor Reuter (4’2”) placed fifth in the high jump relay with a combined height of 8’8”.

Potosi sophomores Lily Reynolds and Maggie Schmitz finished second in the girls’ 2x100 shuttle hurdle relay at 39.48 seconds.

Junior Grace Morgan (34’6”) and sophomore Alexandria Pennekemp (25’5”) earned a bronze medal in the shot put relay. Morgan’s throw was second best out of 34 throwers. Reynolds, Schmitz, senior Brooke Dressler and junior Madelyn Kruser finished fourth in the 4x400 relay (4:44.34).

Last Tuesday, the Potosi girls scored 43 points and placed sixth out of seven teams at the River Ridge Invitational. The Potosi boys also placed sixth out of seven teams with 34 points. The host Timberwolves swept the team titles.
