VIROQUA — A successful sectional meet produced 13 state qualifying performances for the Platteville track and field team.
The Hillmen qualified for this weekend’s WIAA State Championships in La Crosse in 11 individual events and a pair of relays.
Five Platteville boys earned six berths in the Division 2 state meet, while eight Platteville girls combined to earn seven state berths, including two relays.
The Division 2 and 3 State Championships begin Friday at 3 p.m. at UW–La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. Division 1 will be held in the morning. The finals for all three divisions will begin Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Senior John Skubal earned his way back to state in the discus by winning the sectional title with a monster personal-best toss of 162–5. A year ago Skubal placed seventh at state with a throw of 150–0.
Skubal’s sectional winning throw has him seeded second out of 16 qualifiers in this year’s state field. Only Mondovi’s Ethan Palmer had a further sectional throw (168–4). The D2 discus competition will be held Friday.
Skubal also qualified for state this year in the shot put. He finished third in the event with a throw of 50–8½ and is seeded 11th.
Junior Ryan Weber will join Skubal in Friday’s discus competition. Weber, who will be making his first state meet appearance, finished second in the discus at sectionals with a season-best throw of 160–8, that top his previous PR by over 15 feet. He is seeded fourth in Division 2.
Senior Ben Bahr earned a return trip to state in the pole vault after finishing third on Friday by clearing a career-best 13–9. Last year Bahr tied for 14th in D2 with a jump of 12–0. He is seeded seventh this year.
Senior Derek Schambow placed second in the triple jump (43–0¾) eclipsing his PR by more than a foot to earn his first trip to state. He is seeded 13th entering Friday’s triple jump finals.
Senior Matt Goodney finished third in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a personal-best time of :41.22 seconds to qualify for his first state meet. He is seeded 14th.
The Platteville boys scored 58 team points and finished third at the Viroqua sectional behind only Monroe (86) and Mount Horeb (65).
On the girls’ side senior Danielle Jentz earned a return trip to state in the pole vault and will be joined by junior Elissa Bahr, the younger sister of Ben Bahr.
Jentz cleared 10–0 to place second at sectionals. A year ago she placed 10th at state by clearing 9–6.
Meanwhile, Bahr cleared a personal-best 9–9 on Friday to finish fifth and earn an extra qualifier berth to state.
It is believe that the Bahr’s will become the first Platteville brother-sister duo to compete in the same state meet.
Sophomore Maggie Durni qualified for state in a trio of events. She finished fourth in the 100-meter dash Friday with a time of :13.07 and also anchored both of Platteville’s state qualifying relays, the 4x100 and 4x200.
Durni, along with juniors Allie Serres and Julia Evans, and senior Noah Hoeper placed second in the 4x100 relay with a time of :50.71 seconds. They are seeded seventh.
The 4x200 relay of Durni, Serres, Evans and junior Melanie Schaefer placed fourth at sectionals (1:47.91). They are seeded 12th.
Evans is also a three-event state qualifier. She tied with sophomore teammate Faye Bailie for second place in the high jump. Both cleared 5–2 and are among a group of six jumpers that are seeded third.
