Lancaster baseball schedule heats up
Flying Arrows breeze by Hornets; fall short against Hillmen
Mack Mundy
Lancaster right fielder Mack Mundy makes a diving attempt at a fly ball hit during last Thursday nights home game against visiting Darlington. The Flying Arrows got a walk-off single from senior Tanner Reuter in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Redbirds.

LANCASTER — In a span of six days, the Lancaster varsity baseball team played five games, winning four of them, and improved their overall second record to 10-4, while sitting 2-3 in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference.

The week started off for the Flying Arrows last Tuesday night, where they picked up a five-inning 12-0 victory over host Richland Center.

In the game, Lancaster pounded out 11 hits to the Hornet’s four, getting three from senior Tanner Reuter and two each from Drew Reuter and Jordan Reuter.

Tanner and Drew each also had three RBIs, while Jordan brought in two. Isaiah Place crossed the plate three times for the Flying Arrows, while pinch runner Austin Mumm and Tanner Reuter each scored twice.

The visiting Arrows scored three runs in each of the first four innings to take command of the game early, while pitchers Tanner Reuter and Noah Hromodka held the Hornets in check.

Reuter picked up the win on the mound, allowing no runs off three hits in four innings of work. He also struck out one batter and walked none.

Hromodka pitched the final inning of the game, striking out two batters and giving up one hit.

On the following Friday night, the Flying Arrows traveled to Platteville in SWC baseball action, where they were sent home with an 8-7 loss after giving up the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Flying Arrows held a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Hillmen scored two runs to take a 7-6 lead into the seventh.

There, Lancaster’s Isaiah Place hit an RBI double to score Noah Hromodka and tie the game at 7-7 with Platteville having the last at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh, it was Garrett Heer who drew a walk and was moved over to second base on a single by Cam Brant. Heer then stole third base, and on a throwing error reached home to win the game.

Of Lancaster’s 11 hits, Jordan Reuter had three, while Larry Moore III and Isaiah Place each had two.

Mack Mundy drove in three runs, while Place had two RBIs and Jordan Reuter one.

Coach Rick Place used six different pitchers against the Hillmen, but it was junior Evan Straka taking the loss. In two-thirds of an inning, Straka gave up one earned run off one hit, while striking out one batter and walking one.

Larry Moore III got the start on the mound, and in four innings allowed four runs, three earned, off six hits. He also struck out three batters and walked six before being replace by Tanner Reuter.

Of Lancaster’s last five games, three were non-conference, including last Thursday night’s 6-5 victory over visiting Darlington.

In that game, the Flying Arrows used just four hits to Darlington’s 11, but took full advantage of five Redbird errors to win the game in eight innings.

With the score knotted at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, it was Tanner Reuter coming up with the game-winning hit, allowing Mack Mundy to score from third, after the senior drew a lead-off walk, was moved to second on a walk, and went to third on a passed ball.

Tanner Reuter accounted for two of his team’s four hits and recorded the game-winning RBI, while Larry Moore III had two RBIs and John Wagner and Noah Hromodka each had one.

Picking up the win on the mound was Tanner Reuter, who in one inning of work gave up no runs and no hits while striking out one batter.

Starting on the mound was Hromodka who in 5.1 innings gave up two earned runs off seven hits, striking out two batters and walking two.

The Flying Arrows were also in action last Saturday, where they traveled to East Dubuque and were came home with an 8-5 non-conference victory.

Arrow pitchers Brandon Mergen, Evan Straka and Cole Kreul were in control of the game from start to finish, as Straka picked up the win after relieving Mergen in the fourth inning.

In the first three innings, Mergen gave up one earned run off two hits, while striking out two batters and walking one.

Straka pitched the fourth and fifth innings, where he allowed one earned run off two hits, striking out one batter and walking two, before Kreul threw the final two innings to give up two unearned runs off two hits.

At the plate, Lancaster finished with seven hits, getting two from Tanner Reuter and a triple from his brother Jordan.

This past Monday evening, the Flying Arrows pulled out a 7-4 victory over hosts Cuba City, who gave up 10 hits to Lancaster and committed four errors.

Coming away with two hits each were Tanner Reuter, Larry Moore III and Austin Mumm, while Isaiah Place had two RBIs.

Tanner Reuter has had the hot bat for Lancaster as of late, going 9-of-16 in his team’s last five games at the lead-off spot, and that’s with an 0-for-4 performance against Platteville.

Collecting the win this past Monday was Hromodka, who in 2.2 innings allowed one earned run off three hits.

Following this past Tuesday night’s contest against visiting Prairie du Chien, the Flying Arrows host River Valley on Friday, then will travel to Muscoda on Saturday for a non-conference contest against Riverdale.
