DODGEVILLE – In a make-up game played this past Monday evening, the Lancaster varsity boys basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 66-56 victory over the host Dodgers.

With Monday night’s win, coach Roger Bussan’s squad improved to 1-2 in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference action and 4-4 overall, while Dodgeville fell to 2-1 in league play and 3-6 overall.

The Flying Arrows came out hitting on all cylinders early in Monday night’s contest, and after taking an 11-5 lead, used a 10-0 scoring run to take a 21-5 advantage with 7:09 to play in the first half.

Lancaster improved on its lead in the later minutes of the first half as well, holding a 39-19 advantage at halftime and seemingly in control of the contest.

The Dodgers came out in the second half with an aggressive full-court 1-3-1 zone press, which gave the Flying Arrows trouble.

During the first eight minutes of the second half, the Dodgers used a 14-4 scoring run to pull within 43-33 with 11:53 to play in the game.

Throughout the next six minutes, Dodgeville got even closer with the help of a 19-8 scoring run, pulling to within 54-52 with 4:09 showing on the clock.

During the first 16 minutes of the second half, Dodgeville had erased a 20-point deficit by outscoring the Flying Arrows, 33-12.

The final four minutes belonged to Lancaster though, as they outscored the Dodgers, 12-4, to secure the victory.

After going 8-of-11 (73%) from the free throw line in the first half, Lancaster knocked down 13-of-18 (72%) attempts in the second half. On the night, Lancaster made 21-of-29 (72%) free throw attempts, compared to Dodgeville, who was 13-of-21 (62%).

Leading Lancaster with 18 points was junior guard Jalen Schmitz, while fellow junior Austin Mumm had 10 and senior Tanner Reuter nine.

Over the holiday break, the Lancaster boys participated in the Westby Tournament, where they lost to Bangor, 75-66, last Thursday night, then defeated Kickapoo, 66-45, on Friday night.
