Mayberry, Stekel earn scholar-athlete award

Hillsboro High School graduates Cassidy Mayberry and Julie Stekel received National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athlete awards May 2 during Viterbo University’s Athletics Honors Banquet at the Stoney Creek Inn in Onalaska.

To receive the honor, student-athletes must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Mayberry and Stekel are among 243 student-athletes in NAIA’s Division II to receive the honor.

Mayberry, an English major and cross-country athlete, received the award in her first year of eligiblity.

Stekel, a volleyball athlete, helped lead the V-Hawk volleyball team to an overall 33-12 record last season. The team was undefeated on its home court, going 11-0.
