Cuba City vocational agriculture/agri-science instructor and FFA Advisor/Coach, was inducted into the Wisconsin FFA “Hall of Fame” during the sixth session of the 90th Wisconsin FFA Convention on Wednesday, June 12, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison following a dinner reception.
The Wisconsin FFA “Hall of Fame” recognizes members, advisors, alumni, state staff, sponsors and other supporters whose dedication to the Wisconsin Association of FFA allowed it to continue its long tradition of excellence.
The “Hall of Fame” was created to honor those people that have made lifelong contributions to the Wisconsin FFA Association. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is the home of the Wisconsin FFA “Hall of Fame.”
Past honorees include: Orion Samuelson (national farm news radio broadcaster); and E.M. Tiffany (FFA Creed author). Sherwin a graduate of Platteville High School received his B.S (Agriculture Education) from Wisconsin State University and M.S. (Agriculture Education) from University of Wisconsin -- Platteville.
He taught Vocational Agriculture and served as FFA Advisor/Coach at Potosi from 1965 to 1968 and Cuba City from 1968 until retirement in 1999.
During his thirty-four plus years teaching Vocational Agriculture/Agri-science and serving as FFA Advisor/Coach, Sherwin’s students have achieved lofty career “goals”....more than 140 four-year college graduates (twelve with Doctorates) in various fields.
His students have excelled in various agri-related and FFA activities Including: Fifteen (15) State FFA Proficiency Award winners; Three (3) North Central Regional Proficiency winners; Two (2) National Proficiency winners and one (1) National runner-up; (124) Wisconsin (State) FFA (Farmer) Degree recipients (four (4) State Stars); twenty nine (29) American FFA (Farmer) Degree recipients; two (2) State FFA officers; numerous State and National FFA Band and Chorus participants.
He coached numerous FFA judging teams excelling at local, area, state and national levels of competition including: twelve State Champion FFA Land Judging Teams; as well, as State Champions in Dairy Showmanship, Dairy Cattle Judging, Meats Judging and Dairy Foods Judging.
In 1986, his FFA Land Judging Team won the National / (International) FFA land judging grand championship in Oklahoma. The following year he personally won the (Coaches/Advisors/Adults) division National / (International land judging grand championship (only Wisconsin FFA team or FFA Advisor/Coach to ever win either contest in the 68-year competition).
Sherwin has received numerous awards/honors including the National Pfizer FFA advisor award presented in Portland, Ore., in 1971.
He is an “Honorary” Cuba City FFA Chapter Degree, Wisconsin FFA Degree and American FFA Degree recipient. He is a Lifetime member of the Cuba City FFA Alumni, Wisconsin FFA Alumni and National FFA Alumni Associations.
In addition to his agriculture related accomplishments, Sherwin has been very involved in community and civic organizations and related activities. He is a very active member of the Cuba City Lions Club. He has served at the local, state and international levels....including as Wisconsin (27-D1) District Governor in 2002 - 2003 (inducted in Osaka, Japan).
He was an active sportsman and bowler. He is a member of the “700” Bowling Clubs of America and was inducted into the Platteville “USBC” Bowling “Hall of Fame” in 2015.
His personal plaque will adorn the FFA “Hall of Fame” wall at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection in Madison for two years, then his name will be permanently inscribed on the “Master” Plaque, with his personal plaque returned to him.
Jerry is married to Elaine (fifty -three plus years) and together they have two children; son, Bradley and daughter, Kimberly.
