The City of Platteville is considering changing the name of City Park.

The city Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Committee is seeking input from the public regarding a possible name change for City Park to Veterans Park or Veterans Memorial Park.

A request from the Veterans Honor Roll Committee was presented to the Park, Recreation, and Forestry Committee and discussed at its Feb. 18 meeting.

The request was announced to the Common Council at Tuesday’s meeting.

“This is an opportunity for the public to get involved,” said Public Works Director Howard Crofoot. “Naming or re-naming a park can impact the community and we want to make sure we have heard from all those who have an opinion in this matter. ”

The city has opened a comment period seeking public opinion, which will close on Thursday, March 14 at 5 p.m. The responses will be compiled and will be presented to the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Committee on March 18 and to the Plan Commission on April 1.

The recommendations from the two groups will be forwarded to the Common Council for a public hearing in April or May.

Feedback regarding changing the name of City Park to Veterans Park or Veterans Memorial Park can be addressed to City of Platteville, Attn: Angie Donovan, P.O. Box 780 Platteville, WI 53818, or they can be dropped off at City Hall, 75 N.
