Highway Commissioner investigation nears end

An investigation of Crawford County Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock by the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation appears to be headed toward a conclusion.

Details about the investigation are still not being released by the DCI, the county or the individuals involved.

However, DCI spokesperson Dana Brueck confirmed the agency had turned over the results of the investigation to Crawford County District Attorney Tim Baxter for review. Baxter could not be reached for comment on the situation.

Crawford County Board Chairman Pete Flesch acknowledged that Baxter was in possession of a report of the investigation and was currently reviewing it. Flesch expects Baxter will review the report and decide if there is a reason to file charges or not.

Whatever the district attorney decides to do after his review, he will send the report of the investigation and his decision on any charges to an uninterested party out of the area for an impartial review, Flesch explained. The review will probably be conducted by a district attorney from another county.

Flesch indicated he will have a lot more to say when the DA concludes his review.

“I can’t tell you how much I hate to be the guy who says ‘no comment’,” the county board chairman said. “There are a lot of rumors floating around out there. It will be good to get the facts out.”

Is the recent firing of highway department administrative assistant and bookkeeper Sherry Jazdzewski related to the investigation of highway commissioner Dennis Pelock?

“Not directly,” according to Flesch. “The incidents she was terminated for had nothing to do with this investigation (of the highway commissioner)?”

Crawford County Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock did not return phone calls seeking comment on the situation.
