A recall election has been scheduled for Town of Bridgeport Chairman John Karnopp and Township Supervisor Mike Steiner on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.

If a primary is necessary, the primary shall be held on July 1, 2014 and the recall election shall be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

Persons seeking nomination for the recall election were required to file nomination papers containing a minimum of 20 and maximum of 100 signatures of qualified electors by Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

Both Steiner and Karnopp are candidates for the recall election without nomination unless they resign by June 2.

A second recall election is anticipated for Township Supervisor Rodney Fishler. The town board is scheduled to meet and verify sufficiency of signatures on the recall petition.

If the petition is verified, Fishler’s recall election will be scheduled for Tuesday, July 15. If a primary needs to be held in that election, the primary will be July 15 and the recall election on Tuesday, August 12.

If the recall petition is verified by the town board on Wednesday, June 4, Fishler will become a candidate for the recall election without nomination, unless he resigns by June 9.

Bridgeport Township Clerk Linda Smrcina reported the number of qualifying signatures on the recall petitions that she reviewed as:

• Karnopp – 141

• Steiner – 132

• Fishler – 102

The legal requirement of signatures on a petition to force a recall election in Bridgeport Township at this point is 97. That number is derived from a formula based how many people voted in the most recent regularly scheduled Wisconsin gubernatorial election.
