Fire claims two lives in Shullsburg

EARLY MORNING FIRE in Shullsburg, claims two lives Wednesday, May 13. The house is owned by Kenneth and Helen Royce. The tragedy is still being investigated.

SHULLSBURG – On Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at approximately 2:19 a.m. the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received an emergency call for a residential structure fire within the City of Shullsburg. Shullsburg Fire Department, Shullsburg Ambulance and Rural Medical Ambulance Services were alerted to the scene.
    Shullsburg Fire Department arrived on scene at approximately 2:26 a.m. Firefighters made entry into the residence and located two victims inside. Several other victims were located outside of the residence. Shullsburg Fire Department personnel were able remove the two victims from the interior of the residence and extinguish the fire.
    Kenneth R. Royce, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office. Four victims were transported to an area hospital. A second victim, Colt D. Royce, 6-month-old infant son of Olivia Erickson and Dustin Royce, was later pronounced dead at the hospital by the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office. Three other victims were treated and released from the hospital. 
    The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and no intentional human intervention is suspected at this point. This incident is being investigated by the Shullsburg Police Department, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Justice/Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
