A 77-year-old Platteville man died after his car was hit by a tractor–trailer at the U.S. 151/Wisconsin 80/81 interchange Thursday afternoon.

Paul D. Riechers died at UW Hospital in Madison hours after he was taken from Southwest Health by Platteville EMS to UW by Med Flight helicopter, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Riechers had exited northbound 151 around 3:05 p.m. and was stopped at the end of the northbound exit ramp as a tractor–trailer owned by RE Transit, LLC of Shannon, Ill., and driven by Randy J. Voss, 59, Freeport, Ill., was going south on 80/81 through the interchange.

The Sheriff’s Office said Riechers pulled away from the stop sign as Voss’ semi was approaching the off-ramps. The semi struck Riechers’ car on both driver’s-side doors. Riechers had to be extricated from his vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Platteville Fire Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and UW–Platteville police assisted at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol are investigating.
