Platteville police report that several attempted scams are taking place, including the phone IRS scam, in which someone claiming to be an Internal Revenue Service representative calls demanding payment for back taxes.

The IRS always initiates communications regarding taxes by mail, not by phone.

Police remind people to not give out personal information or money over the phone.
