Van collides with school bus

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, there was a collision between a van and a school bus for the Platteville School District that resulted in injuries to those in the van, but not to the driver of the bus.

On April 28,  at about 4:03 p.m. a call was received by the law enforcement dispatch center of a two-vehicle crash on Baker Ford Road at Harrison North Road. The investigating deputy learned that Duane Butson, 64, Platteville, was operating a 2004 Blue Bird School Bus from Warco Transportation for the Platteville School District.  Butson was driving east on Baker Ford Road, approaching Harrison North Road.

The bus did not have any students in it at this time.

At the same time, Jordan Clark, 17, of Oconto Falls was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander van north on Harrison North Rd approaching Baker Ford Road.  Her dad, Robert Clark, 39, also of Oconto Falls, was in the front passenger seat of the van.  Jordan pulled out from the yield sign on Harrison North Road at that intersection, in to the path of Butson’s school bus.

Butson realized that the van was not yielding and he swerved left, trying to go around the van.  Jordan continued to pull out, making a left turn to go west on Baker Ford Rd.  Butson was not able to avoid hitting the driver’s side of the van.  The van ended up in the driveway to the residence on the north side of that intersection.

Jordan had to be extricated from the van.  Robert was able to free himself.  Both Jordan and Robert sustained serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to Southwest Health Center for treatment.  Butson was uninjured in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the crash by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Platteville Fire Department, Southwest Health EMS, Precision Auto of Platteville, and Kieler Service Center of Kieler, WI.

The crash remains under investigation.
