MUSCODA - The varsity football team lost to the SWCHA Saints by the score of 38-0 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference football game.

This was a tough outing for the Chieftains, as they struggled to get anything going offensively. They were limited to just four first downs and 89 yards of rushing during the game. This led to the Saints having multiple possessions and very good field position.

SWCHA got on the board midway through the first quarter on a touchdown run. After the two point conversion, it was 8-0. The Saints then piled up 24 second quarter points to go up 32-0 at half time.

The Chieftains threaten before the half as Caleb Johnson hit Ethan Haffner on a stop route. Ethan lateraled to Tyler Hach, who raced deep into Saints territory.

“Our guys did a great job executing that play,” said Head Coach Curt Thompson. “Unfortunately we would not cash in on the opportunity.”

The Chieftains got out to a quick start in the second half, as Drake Harris dug out the onsides kick. Riverdale hit on a couple of nice runs on the opening drive of the second half, but did not score and just could never get anything going.

Defensively, they played well in the second half, highlighted by some nice plays by Oakley Schneider who was making his first start of the year at linebacker and Sean Deglow at defensive tackle.

The Saints would add one second half touchdown to make it a 38-0 final.

“That was a rough one, said the coach. “We had a tough time and there are a lot of reasons for that, but the bottom line is we need to move forward and get better. I know that things have not gone as we would have liked, but if we stick together, stay positive and continue to improve we can still have a very successful second half of the season.”
