Tiger grapplers finish third at their own invitational

The Hillsboro wrestling team scored 135 points and finished third out of nine teams at their own tournament, the Hillsboro Tiger Invitational, Saturday.

Senior Jacob Benish won the 195-pound title, freshman Dane Bach finished second at 145 pounds and sophomore Jacob Urban placed second at 170 pounds.

The Tigers also produced four third-place finishers as 16 of the 18 wrestlers on the Hillsboro roster, took part in the event, some in the same weight classes.

The Wautoma/Wild Rose co-op won the team title with 182.5 points, ahead of Pittsville (150).

Benish (16–9) recorded three pins and an 11–7 decision over Blake Duket of Wautoma/Wild Rose to win the five-man 195-pound bracket.

Bach (17–8) used a first-round bye, then recorded a pair of pins, but suffered a 7–1 loss to Pittsville’s Scott Schooley to finish second in the six-man 145-pound class.

Urban (20–7) also received a bye, recorded a pair of pins, but suffered a third-period pin to Wautoma/Wild Rose’s Dillon Martin and finished second out of six wrestlers at 170.

Sophomore Jason Griffths (20–7) finished third at 113, as did sophomore Dakota Wells (11–9) at 120, freshman Tristan Vesbach (4–10) at 160 and junior Braden Voltz (9–13) at 285.

Coach Snapper Verbsky’s Tigers (4–1, 2–1 SBC) will return to action tonight when they host New Lisbon in a Scenic Bluffs Conference dual at 7 p.m. Hillsboro will then host SBC-leading Cashton Tuesday night to close out the regular season.
