Belmont toughs out a key win over Highland

BELMONT – Senior Kailee Kamps has shown over the years that she will do whatever it takes to lead Belmont to a victory. So, the Braves’ all-time leading scorer wasn’t going to let a little thing like a rolled ankle slow her down.
Kamps battled through the injury by scoring eight consecutive points on a four-possession stretch late in the fourth quarter to guide the Lady Braves over Highland, 53-47, in a key Six Rivers West girls’ basketball game at BHS on Monday, Jan. 16.
This game was originally scheduled for Jan. 12, but it had to be moved to Monday night due to the snowstorm last Thursday. Undaunted, the Braves (11-1 overall, 4-0) fought off each and every rally by the Cardinals (1-2, 7-3) to post their 11th straight victory and remain atop the SRW standings.
The Braves built up several good-sized leads throughout the game, but the Cards would fight their way back into it each time.
After Belmont opened up an 11-point advantage on their guests midway through the third quarter, Highland fought all the way back to tie the game at 42 all with just over three minutes remaining to play.
Up stepped Kamps, who sank three baskets and a pair of free throws on four straight Belmont possessions to put her team ahead 50-43, and the Cards had no time left to answer this time around.
Kamps matched her season-high with 27 points to lead the Braves’ attack, while junior Cassie McCarthy chipped in with 11 points and senior Molly Bockhop added seven for the hosts.
Taylor Wienkes led Highland with 20 points and Leigh Drury netted 14 for the Cards.
At Madison, on Saturday, Jan. 14, Kailee Kamps scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the third quarter as the Lady Braves cruised over Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day, 65-29, in non-conference action.
The Braves used a 20-3 second-quarter run to build up a 34-9 halftime advantage, then put the game out of reach by outscoring the host Challengers (4-5), 20-11, in the third quarter.
Cassie McCarthy tallied nine points for the Braves.
Keegan Kamps and Jordyn Kamps added seven points apiece and Kalyn Kamps scored six points as the Kamps’ crew combined for 47 of the team’s 65 points.
Belmont has another big challenge waiting for them on Friday, Jan. 20, when they host River Ridge (5-6, 3-1) in a huge SRW showdown. A win by the Braves would wrap up a perfect first-half of the season as they seek the school’s first-ever league championship.
