POTOSI – In this past Monday night’s Six Rivers West conference softball game between two traditionally rich programs, it was uncharacteristic to see Potosi and Belmont combine for 12 errors in what wound up being a 13-6 victory for the visiting Braves.

With the win, Belmont improved to 3-0 in league play and 7-2 overall, while Potosi fell to 1-2 in conference action and 3-4 overall.

“Obviously the errors hurt us, but they also had some timely hitting that magnified things and kept innings alive for them,” said Potosi coach Bud Johnson.

The Chieftains committed seven errors in Monday night’s contest, while the Braves had five miscues on the night.

Belmont did use nine hits to collect the win, getting two each from Brook, Knebel and Maddie Rand, while Potosi finished with six, getting two from Maddie Hawes and two from Emily Langmeier.

Hawes went 2-for-4 at the plate with a one-run triple in the fifth inning, while Langmeier was 2-for-3.

Langmeier also took the loss in the pitching circle after surrendering seven earned runs off six hits in 6.3 innings of work. She also struck out six batters and walked two.

Freshman Jadyn Noonan pitched the final two-thirds inning, in which time she gave up one hit and struck out one batter.

In non-conference action last Thursday night, the Chieftains sent visiting Barneveld home with a 4-2 loss, as Potosi took advantage of five hits and three Barneveld errors.

Coach Bud Johnson’s squad turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Barneveld managed to cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the sixth, which was duplicated by the Chieftains in their half of the sixth.

Sophomore Abby Kaiser picked up two RBIs in the contest, scoring Maddie Hawes in the fourth inning off a hard hit single, and scoring Taylor Bloyer in the sixth on a fielder’s choice.

Langmeier picked up the win in the circle after giving up just two earned runs off three hits, striking out five batters and walking four.

This past Saturday, Potosi competed at the Cuba City Tournament, where they went 1-1 with a loss to the Cubans and a win over Dodgeville.

Against the Cubans, Potosi had a hard time getting any offense going with pitcher Emily Wiederholt in the circle, as the Cuba City senior held the Chieftains hitless in a 2-0 shutout.

In 69 pitches, Wiederholt threw 55 strikes and 14 balls, striking out 11 Potosi batters and walking just one.

Langmeier pitched all six innings for the Chieftains, allowing two earned runs off five hits, striking out nine batters and walking three.

In their consolation game against Dodgeville, Potosi got the bats going to pull out a 4-3 victory on nine hits.

Abby Kaiser, Emily Langmeier and Brooke McKillip each had two hits in the contest, as Bloyer had one RBI and Kaiser had two.

Bloyer picked up her RBI on a triple hit in the third inning, while Kaiser hit a bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh to score Hannah Nusbaum and Maddie Hawes.

The Dodgers threatened in the bottom half of the seventh, but Potosi’s defense got out of a bases loaded situation with one out to secure the victory.

Freshman pitcher Jadyn Noonan picked up the win in the circle, allowing just one earned run off two hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking two.

Following this past Tuesday night’s home game against Shullsburg/Benton, the Chieftains will travel to Black Hawk on Thursday night, and to Seneca on Friday.
