FENNIMORE – Struggling a bit with the size of their opponent and their inability to match up inside, the Cassville varsity girls’ basketball team suffered a 57-32 non-conference loss to host Fennimore last Friday night.
The loss drops coach Martin Kirschbaum’s squad to 0-5 overall, as they hit the road this Thursday night against Benton/Shullsburg (0-1, 3-3).
The Golden Eagles jumped on top of the Comets early in Friday night’s contest, and held a 15-4 advantage after one quarter of play. By halftime, Fennimore led Cassville, 31-13.
With a sizable deficit to overcome in the second half, the Comets were unable to stage a comeback, as they were outscored 26-19 in the final 16 minutes of action.
Sophomore guard Andrea Okey led the Comets with 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Jenna Friesen added seven points, and sophomore Brielle Balif pulled down five rebounds.
As a team, the Comets made 11-of-20 (55%) field goal attempts and were 6-of-13 (46%) from the free throw line. They also committed 23 total turnovers.
Leading Fennimore with 20 points was Alexie Needham, while Cheyanne Udelhoven added 11.
