Kartman/Jensen team up to beat the Chieftains

POTOSI — Behind the bat of junior Ty Kartman, and the arm of freshman Cam Jensen, the Cassville varsity baseball team exacted a bit of revenge this past Monday evening over their rivals from Potosi.

Earlier this year, the Chieftains handed Cassville an 11-1 loss in Six Rivers West play, and looked poised to claim one of the top spots in the league standings.

With Monday’s win though, Cassville shares a 3-2 league mark with Highland, while Potosi is 4-2 and Shullsburg/Benton is unbeaten at 5-0.

At Potosi this past Monday evening, Kartman led the Comets with a perfect 3-for-3 batting performance that included a two-run double.

Fellow junior Ryan Kirschbaum wasn’t far behind with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate with an RBi  single, while Jenson was 2-for-3.

On the mound for Cassville Jensen limited the Chieftains to just three hits, which amounted to just one run in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Jensen threw 78 pitches in seven innings, striking out nine batters and walking six.

Taking the loss for Potosi was senior right hander Logan Udelhofen.

Last Tuesday evening, the Comets suffered an 18-0 loss to league-leading Shullsburg/Benton, which pounded out 14 hits and held Cassville to two.

The home team scored 12 runs in a disastrous third inning for the Comets, who were held scoreless in the five-inning affair.

Jensen took the loss on the hill, striking out two batters and walking three in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Elijah Okey pitched 1 1/3 innings, striking out three batters and walking two.

In non-conference action last Friday, the Comets picked up a 5-0 win over visiting Monticello.

In that game, Cassville had just five hits, but got two RBIs from Kartman on a triple, while Jensen, Okey and Christian Reynolds each had an RBI.

Kartman picked up the win on the mound, giving up no earned runs off one hit, while striking out 18 batters and walking none.

Following this past Tuesday night’s road game at Belmont, the Comets will host Barneveld on Friday, then travel to Patch Grove next Monday to take on River Ridge.
