POTOSI — Junior Chase Kruser’s bases loaded, line drive single to left field plated Spencer Hawes and Potosi walked off with a 3–2 victory over visiting Highland Monday at Potosi High School.
Hawes singled to start the bottom of the seventh and moved to third on back-to-back walks by Hunter Leibfried and Tim Fritz.
Kruser’s game-winning hit made a winner of senior left hander Tyler Udelhoven, who tossed a complete game three-hitter. Udelhoven (1–0) struck out eight and did not allow a walk, allowing one earned run in seven innings of work.
Potosi improved to 6–4 overall and 6–3 in the Six Rivers West. The Chieftains have now won two in a row after a disappointing 11–4 loss to River Ridge last Tuesday night.
Leibfried’s squeeze bunt in the bottom of the fifth inning tied Monday’s game at 2–2.
Highland (6–4, 5–4 SRW) took a 2–1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on Bailey Bodenstein’s RBI double.
Last Thursday Potosi bounced back from Tuesday’s setback to Ridge with a dominating 26–2 victory over Black Hawk, a game that was called after three innings due a mutually agreed upon mercy rule.
Kruser went 4-for-4, hit for the cycle and drove in seven runs. His three-run homer in the bottom of the first helped Potosi build a 12–2 first-inning lead.
Sophomore Travis Collins hit a grand slam homer — his second grand slam of the season — in the second inning. Collins also collected the win allowing two unearned runs on one hit in three innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
Last Tuesday River Ridge used four hits, three walks and two crucial Potosi errors to score eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun the Chieftains 11–4.
Logan Udelhofen scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 3–3. Later in the inning Leibfried’s RBI ground out gave Potosi a 4–3 lead.
