SHULLSBURG — Shullsburg wasn’t going to let rival Benton get them the second time around.
The Miners kicked off the second half of the Six Rivers West season by routing the visiting Zephyrs, 49-29, at SHS on Thursday, Jan. 20.
The win allowed the Miners (5-12 overall, 2-3 SRW) to avenge a nine-point loss to the Zephyrs (6-12, 1-5) from Dec. 3 for a season split, and also helped Coach Nathan Russell’s squad snap a four-game slide.
Shullsburg held a 24-13 lead at the intermission, and then outscored the Zephyrs, 25-16, in the second half for their second SRW win of the season.
Sophomore Camden Russell led the Miners with 16 points. Her cousin, freshman Taylor Russell, registered a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds to go along with a team-high three blocked shots and three steals.
Sophomore Hailey Duerst and freshman Stella Spillane scored eight points apiece for the Miners, who got to the foul line 32 times in the game sinking 16 of their free throws. Freshman Olivia Brown tallied six points and a team-best four assists in the win.
Junior Zoe Stluka paced the Zephyrs with 10 points.
Shullsburg was busy on the court with three other non-conference games over the past week. Boscobel (12-3) defeated the Miners, 57-44, at home on Tuesday, Jan. 18, behind a combined 36-point effort from sisters Sarah and Erin Knowles, who scored 18 apiece in the Bulldogs’ victory.
C. Russell and Brown netted 13 points apiece to lead Shullsburg.
At Seneca, on Saturday, Jan. 22, the Miners made it two wins in a row with a 46-35 victory over the host Indians (3-9).
Brown poured in a career-high 17 points for Shullsburg, while T. Russell had a big all-around game for the Miners with seven points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
At Argyle on Monday. Jan. 24, the Miners’ two-game winning streak came to a close with a 53-46 loss to the host Orioles.
A 3-pointer by C. Russell brought the Miners within three at 47-44 with 2:47 left, but the Orioles (7-9) went 6-for-8 from the foul line down the stretch to hold on for their first win over Shullsburg since 2007 ending an 11-game losing streak.
T. Russell led three Miners in double figures with a career-best 19 points. C. Russell scored 15 and Spillane added 10.
Maggie Godfrey and Chesney Leigh netted 15 points apiece to lead the Orioles, and Grace Ganshert followed with 14 for the hosts.
Shullsburg returns home to host River Ridge (Wisc.) in a SRW game on Friday, Jan. 28, and the Miners will remain at home for a non-conference game against River Ridge/Scales Mound (Ill.) on Monday, Jan. 31.
