Potosi hammers Belmont, falls to defending West champ Shullsburg

POTOSI — With the first two conference games in the books, the Potosi boys’ basketball team concluded last week’s action with a Six Rivers West record of 1–1 and an overall mark of 2–1.

Coach Mike Uppena’s squad hosted the Braves from Belmont last Tuesday night, and cruised to a 75–35 victory before suffering a 67–41 loss at Shullsburg.

The Chieftains were dominant on Tuesday, scoring a whopping 45 points in the first half, while giving up just 18 to the Braves. They then went on to outscore their opponent, 30-17, in the second half.

Junior Alex Udelhofen led all scorers with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and a team-high five of his team’s 13 steals. Fellow junior Nic Spriggs chipped in 14 points, while sophomore Brady Curtis added nine points and nine rebounds. Freshman center Nick Edge pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Will Bierman dished out a team-high seven assists.

As a team, Potosi made 28-of-62 (45 percent) shot attempts, including 4-of-12 (33 percent) from 3-point range.
Sophomore Collin Austin scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Braves, who fell to 0–4 with the loss.

Friday night was a different story for Potosi against two-time defending conference champion Shullsburg. The Miners took an early lead and never trailed. Shullsburg held a 31–17 halftime advantage and continued to pour it on in the second half, outscoring Uppena’s Chieftains 36–24 in the final 18 minutes.

Shullsburg senior  Hunter Matye led all scorers with 26 points. Fellow senior Joey Meyer added 17 points and senior guard Noah Wand made three 3-pointers and chipped in 12 points for the winners.

Udelhofen led Potosi with nine points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Ethan Groom also scored nine points, while Curtis and Spriggs chipped in seven points each.

On the glass, Potosi was out-rebounded 48–34 by the much taller Miners, who accounted for 15 offensive boards and 33 defensive.

As a team, Potosi shot just 26 percent (14-of-54) from the field. They were 9-of-14 (64 percent) from the free throw line and committed 12 turnovers.

Following this past Tuesday night’s home game against Pecatonica, the Chieftains will travel to Cassville this Thursday evening.

Belmont fell to 0–5 on the season and 0–2 in the Six Rivers West with a 63–32 loss to visiting Highland on Friday night.

Derek Miller scored 20 points to lad the Cardinals’ (3–2, 1–1) balanced attack. John Ross Linschied added 14 points and Spencer Linscheid finished with 11 for the winners.

Belmont traveled to Monticello for a non-conference game on Tuesday and will return to action Thursday at home against Shullsburg (3–0, 2–0).
