Warriors and Braves compete on the track

PATCH GROVE – The Black Hawk and Belmont track and field teams each participated in a pair of competitions over the past week with each team getting some fine performances out of their athletes.

Black Hawk earned second-place team finishes in both the girls’ and boys’ meets at the five-team River Ridge Six Rivers Meet held in Patch Grove on Tuesday, April 19, and then the Warriors came away with a pair of seventh-place finishes at the eight-team Brodhead Invitational held on Friday, April 22.

The Braves also competed at Tuesday’s event at River Ridge, placing fifth in both meets; and they also took to the track at Saturday’s Platteville Relays, placing 10th in the girls’ meet and 11th in the boys’ meet along side some tough competition.

Black Hawk sophomore Veronica Cheatham swept the titles in the girls’ hurdle events on Tuesday, winning the 100 high hurdles in 20.19 seconds and the 300 low hurdles in 1:00.23.

Junior Jaliyah Collins added a first in the discus with a toss of 111’7” and was second in the shot put at 30’8” for the Warriors. Collins also won the discus at Brodhead on Friday with a top mark of 106’3”.

Junior Jenna Meier was second in the 100 (13.94) and joined with juniors Raylin Peterson and Tara Wellnitz and freshman Maddy Lange to finish second in the 4x100-meter relay (57.23).

Lange also broke her own school record in the pole vault after tying for fourth with a height of 6’6”.

Senior Hailey Jentz led Belmont with a first-place finish in the triple jump (30’6.5’) and a second-place in the long jump (15’4”).

Senior Anna Hardyman was second in the 400 (1:0772) and freshman Maggie Wedig was second in the 1,600 (6:51.88) for the Braves.

In the boys’ meet, Warriors’ sophomore Lane Marty swept the boys’ hurdles with winning times of 19.13 in the 110 high and 47.80 in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Junior Jovanny Erickson won the 400 in 56.79 seconds and was second in the 200 (24.87). Other seconds for the Warriors went to senior Elijah Shelton in the 100 (11.85) and the long jump (18’0.5”).

Belmont got seconds from freshman Mason Oellerich in the 400 (58.73) and their 400 relay team of Oellerich, senior Conner Varvil, junior Noah Fritz and freshman Gavin Opitz (51.95).
