DARLINGTON – The Darlington Redbirds girls’ basketball team saw a little bit of everything on the hardwood this past week after packing three games into a span of five days.
The Lady Redbirds (3-3 overall, 2-2 in SWAL) opened the week with a tough 65-47 league loss to #5-ranked Fennimore on Tuesday, then bounced back to rout Riverdale, 63-26, in another SWAL contest on Friday before dropping a hard-fought 37-32 non-conference game to Lancaster on Saturday night.
At Fennimore, on Tuesday, Dec. 13, senior guard Breland Prochaska converted 13 of her 15 free throw attempts on the way to a game-high 28 points as the host Golden Eagles rolled over the Redbirds, 65-47, in SWAL action.
The Eagles (6-0, 4-0– ranked #5 in latest Wissports.Net Division 4 state coaches’ poll) outscored the Redbirds in each quarter, but it was a 19-8 scoring advantage in the second quarter that gave them a comfortable 34-22 halftime lead.
Fennimore finished the game going 24-for-31 at the foul line compared to Darlington’s 12-for-19 effort from the stripe.
Junior guard Cassidy Chambers paced the ‘Birds with 17 points, while senior guard Amy Jorgenson added 12 points and junior center Claire Scott followed with 10 points.
Alexi Needham netted 18 points and Morgan Gunderson added 14 for the Eagles.
At Darlington, on Friday, Dec. 16, the Lady Redbirds jumped out of the gates early and built up a 16-3 first quarter lead en route to a 63-26 SWAL victory over Riverdale (0-5, 0-4).
Cassidy Chambers led three players in double figures with a game-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Amy Jorgenson chipped in with 17 points, while Claire Scott tallied 10 points and Cassidy Cox came off the bench for eight points for the ‘Birds.
At Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 17, the host Flying Arrows got the best of the visiting Redbirds, 37-32, in a non-conference rematch of last year’s thrilling D-4 regional semifinal game.
These two teams met on this very same floor nine months earlier with the Redbirds shooting down the Arrows, 52-47, on their way to a sectional appearance.
Darlington opened up strong on Saturday night, grabbing a 13-2 lead right out of the gates, but the Arrows (2-3) fired back with a stunning 27-7 over the middle two quarters to turn an 11-point deficit into a 29-20 advantage and they held on in the fourth quarter to avenge that loss from last March.
The ‘Birds led 19-17 at halftime before getting outscored 12-1 in the third quarter to fall behind the Arrows.
Amy Jorgenson led all scores with 13 points, but Lancaster countered with 11 points apiece from Emily Martin and Kate Noble.
Claire Scott added eight points for the ‘Birds, and Cassidy Chambers chipped in with five points.
Next up, Darlington hosts Pecatonica in non-conference action on Thursday, Dec. 22.
