RICHLAND CENTER — Iowa–Grant season Ben McFall fulfilled the first of his season-long goals Saturday by winning the 285-pound individual conference title at the annual SWAL/SWC Clash.
     Fellow seniors Tucker Sarbacker (138 pounds) and Derek Peat (195) also reached the finals, but both finished second after championship-match losses.
     Other than their big three, it was in coach Ryan Allen’s opinion a disappointing day for the defending team champion Panthers (206 points), who finished second behind Lancaster (289.5) and Mineral Point (251.5).
     “No doubt I would have liked to see more champs,” said Allen. “Bottom line is, we didn’t wrestle well. A couple guys looked ok but most of the team did not wrestle as well as I know they can. 
     “I don’t think we were prepared mentally very well and that’s mostly my fault. I think most of the things we were struggling with this weekend can be overcome and right now we just need to focus on using this week to get ready for next Saturday.  If we can put together a great week of practice we can get a lot of people moving on to the sectional meet in two weeks and that’s the goal.”
     Iowa–Grant will travel to Lancaster Saturday for a loaded Division 3 regional, that features the top-ranked Arrows and the Clash runner-up Pointers.

Platteville’s Anderson places third at 182
     Platteville senior Vinny Anderson earned Belmont/Platteville’s top individual finish with a third place performance at 182 pounds.
     After a bye Anderson defeated Cuba City/Southwestern’s Forrest Thill, 5–2, before dropping his semifinal match to Mineral Point’s Robby Chubb, 9–3. He then bounced back with a 13–3 major decision over Riverdale’s Tyler Wanek in the third-place match.
     The Braves, who finished 0–5 in SWC duals this winter and had just seven wrestlers competing at Saturday’s conference meet, scored just 60 team points and placed 12th out of 13 teams.
     Belmont junior John Hentrich placed fifth at 138 pounds.
     One Braves, noticeably missing from the final results was Belmont junior Lucas Stoney.
Stoney (16–10), who earned second-team all-conference honors as sophomore injured his knee at the Belmont Duals on Jan. 12. Two weeks ago he learned the injury was a season-ending ACL tear.
     “We are hoping he will be back for at least half of the football season [in the fall],” said Braves’ head wrestling coach Andrew Campbell. “It really sucks that it ended this way, he had a good chance to make it to state if he had been healthy.”
Meanwhile Anderson, Hentrich and the remaining healthy Braves will travel to Dodgeville on Saturday for a Division 2 regional.
     Last Tuesday Belmont/Platteville (1–11) wrapped up its dual meet season with a 41–16 loss to River Ridge/Cassville in a non-conference dual held at Platteville High School.
