BOYS BASKETBALL: Mineral Point (10–4, 6–1) at Fennimore (13–1, 6–1, #8 in Division 4, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.

     There are a number of interesting ares games in the next seven days, but the premier game on the slate in Tuesday’s Southwest Wisconsin Activities League battle for first place between Mineral Point and host Fennimore.

     Coach Tom Needham’s Golden Eagles, who are ranked eighth in the this week’s Division 4 coach’s poll, have not lost wince a 96–75 beatdown at Mineral Point on Dec. 14. Junior Reid Larson, a two-time first-team All-SWAL selection, joined the 1,000-point club in last Friday night’s win at Southwestern. Last Thursday, he scored a career-high 30 points in a 90–40 blowout of visiting Riverdale, then Monday night he dropped a game-high 25 points on visiting Lancaster in an 83–74 non-conference victory. Larson is averaging a team-high 18.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting 40.2 percent (39 of 97) from 3-point land. Sophomore point guard Kellen Kenney posted his first career triple–double in last week’s win over Riverdale and is now averaging 12 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game while shooting 57.4 percent from the field and a team-high 81.7 percent (49-for-60) from the free throw line. 

     Mineral Point is ridding a four-game winning streak going into tonight’s game against third-place Darlington. The Pointers have won five of six games since dropping a pair of non-conference games at the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout over Christmas break. Coach Dan Burreson’s club is led by two of the most talented underclassmen in this part of the state. Freshman Brayden Dailey, a 6’5” wing with inside-outside skills is second in the SWAL in scoring at 19.4 points per game. Sophomore point guard Isaac Lindsey, who is already drawing Division 1 college interest, is averaging 17.1 points per game through 14 contests.

     Should, Mineral Point survive tonight’s visit from Darlington (the Redbirds did hand Point its only conference loss, 56–53, on Dec. 8, Tuesday’s SWAL showdown in Fennimore could be the game of the year in this part of the state.
