IowaGrant/Highland senior Max Maylor will be shooting for a third-straight conference title this Saturday at the SWCSWAL Clash at Mineral Point High School.

GAME OF THE WEEK (Feb. 1–7)

PREP WRESTLING: SWC–SWAL Clash Conference tournament, Saturday, Feb. 3, at Mineral Point, 10 a.m.

     Mineral Point will host this year’s SWC/SWAL Clash Conference tournament on Saturday. Three-time defending Clash champion Fennimore (14–3, 6–0) is favored to win this year’s Clash title for the the fourth straight year. Coach Chad Steldt’s Golden Eagles, who are currently ranked second in Division 3, clinched a fourth-straight SWAL duals title with a 49–19 victory at Mineral Point (13–7, 3–3). SWC duals champion Prairie du Chien (16–1, 5–0 SWC, #4 in D2), SWC runner-up Lancaster (14–1, 5–1 SWC, #7 in D3), River Valley (3–2 SWC, #5 in D2), as well as SWAL runner-up Iowa–Grant/Highland (11–4, 5–1) figure to be Fennimore’s top challengers for the team title.

     “If you want to see the best wrestling in Southwest Wisconsin, find Mineral Point High School on Saturday,” said Fennimore head coach Chad Steldt. “There will be several state championship caliber matches taking place.”

     Nine former Clash champions will be in action. River Valley senior Zach Licht (33–1 this year at 132 pounds) will be gunning for his four straight conference title after winning the 132-pound title a year ago and Iowa–Grant/Highland senior Max Maylor (34–1 at 160) is a two-time champion. 

     Belmont/Platteville senior Isaac Wiegel (33–3 at 120), Mineral Point junior Danny Pittz (25–2 at 126), Mineral Point senior Riley Workman (23–4, 182), Riverdale senior Caleb Johnson (35–2 at 195), Iowa–Grant/Highland junior Drew Hennessy (34–2, 220) and Dodgeville senior Shelby Jones (30–4 at 285) all won individual conference titles a year ago. Iowa–Grant/Highland senior Brady Peat (32–3 at 182) finished second a last year after winning a conference title in 2016.

     Other runner-ups from last year, who will be in contention for titles on Saturday are River Valley senior Caleb Radtke (28–8 at 126), Fennimore junior Trevor Wanek (31–6 at 138), Prairie du Chien sophomore Treason Saint (33–3 at 138), Dodgeville senior John Phelan (29–7 at 160), River Valley junior Shane Liegel (35–0 at 170) and Prairie du Chien senior Stephen Ronnfeldt (29–6 at 195).

 

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL: River Ridge (14–4, 5–3) at Shullsburg (15–4, 8–1, #10 in D5), Friday, 7:30 p.m. 

     The Miners had take another step closer to clinching at least a share of this year’s Six Rivers West title with a win over visiting River Ridge Friday night. The Miners got a little bit of help from the Timberwolves a week ago, when Ridge knocked off Potosi, 54–41.
